Euro NCAP – who is best in class 2022?

Summary

According to the safety organisation Euro NCAP, electric cars passed the test of safety assistants and crash characteristics with the best score of all tested vehicles. Only one of the vehicles that took a top place is a combustion engine.
To determine the best in class, the weighted sum of the scores in each of the four assessment areas is calculated:
Adult Occupants, Children, Pedestrians and Safety Assist.
This sum serves as the basis for comparing the vehicles. Vehicles qualify for the title of best in class based only on their rating with standard safety equipment. Additional ratings based on optional equipment are excluded.

Best in class
Tesla Model S (executive cars)
Hyundai Ioniq 6 (large family cars)
Wey Coffee 01 (large SUV)
Tesla Model S (electric car)
Ora Funky Cat (small family car / compact car)
Tesla Model Y (compact SUV)

Euro NCAP’s crash and accident prevention tests support the thesis that electric vehicles are safer than conventional vehicles.

Details

Euro NCAP

Euro NCAP is a society of European transport ministries, automobile clubs and insurance associations based in Brussels. The organisation carries out crash tests on new types of cars and then evaluates their safety and the available safety systems.

Very detailed and clear presentations of the tests carried out and the results obtained are published in 10 languages.

The ratings explained

Euro NCAP introduced the overall safety rating in 2009, based on assessment in four important areas:

  • Adult Occupant Protection (for the driver and passenger);
  • Child Occupant Protection;
  • Pedestrian Protection which has been expanded to include cyclists and is now known as Vulnerable Road User (VRU) protection; and
  • Safety Assist, which evaluated driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.

The more stars, the better

5 star safety: Excellent overall rating for impact protection and good equipment with comprehensive and practical accident avoidance technology.

present example Tesla Model S:

Vehicles with double ratings?
One of the ratings is based on a vehicle having the standard safety equipment present in each variant of the model range in all 28 EU Member States. This rating reflects the minimum safety standard.
The second rating is based on a vehicle equipped with a “safety package” that may be offered to customers as an additional option.

Both Euro NCAP and Global NCAP tests are thorough tests of the safety capabilities of new cars. However, Euro NCAP tests include full frontal, front offset, side impact and side pole tests, whereas the Global NCAP ratings are based only on front offset crash tests.
