Catena-X – for a high-performance automotive industry in Europe

Summary

Catena-X

Due to global mechanization and ever increasing international performance pressure on the European automotive market, it has to evolve continuously. The next step is called Catena-X. The development of this network focuses on the easy connection of OEMs with smaller companies, a simple overview of business processes and a market place for the exchange of data and contracts.

Vision

Catena-X is a collaborative, open data ecosystem for the automotive industry of the future. It networks global players to form end-to-end value chains – with the approach of being simple, secure and independent. The goal is standardized, global data exchange based on European values. The claim is data sovereignty: Whoever makes data available retains control and decides individually who is involved in the data exchange, how, when, where and under what conditions. Catena-X ensures secure and reliable implementation.

The added value

New business opportunities and profitability – from medium-sized businesses to corporations: Catena-X aims to improve the competitiveness of all participating companies. Enabled and implemented are use cases for digital, end-to-end supply chains with secure, sovereign and standardized data exchange.
Benefits: with above-average resilience, innovative strength and earnings opportunities. Catena-X is openly designed: Additional industries and ecosystems can be included in the future.
Data chains could cushion crisis consequences.

The approach of Catena-X: to create a “single source of truth” for all partners with the help of uniform interfaces.

Will cloud collaborations help with the semiconductor shortage?

Especially in times of crisis, the dovetailing of systems should ensure better planning in the future. During the height of the pandemic and the ongoing global semiconductor shortage, it became clear how vulnerable industry supply chains are to exogenous events. Fundamental networking via a shared automotive cloud could ensure that in the future an impending shortage of resources is identified at an early stage and the automotive industry can take unified countermeasures.

The 25 founding members from business and academia who launched Project 2020 include the Volkswagen Group, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, ZF, Bosch, Siemens, SAP and Deutsche Telekom. Ford, a U.S. automaker, also recently joined the initiative.

Details

Gaia-X

Gaia-X is to form a Europe-wide cloud for companies, with the aim of increasing competitiveness. The aim is to ensure secure data storage via an open, digital infrastructure and make it accessible to business partners via predefined rules. This is mainly used by representatives of business, science and administration, with partners mainly in Europe.

Catena-X

Based on this cloud, the Catena-X Automotive Network e.V. was founded in 2021 by the automotive industry. The founding organizations include big names such as BMW AG, Mercedes Benz AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, SAP SE, Siemens AG and ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Furthermore, the number of participating companies is steadily increasing.

The goal of this data ecosystem is the networking of all participants in a value chain and thus in-depth complete transparency, which also brings advantages for the fulfillment of the supply chain due diligence law. At the same time, this digitalization enables error analysis and optimization of the entire production process, for example in the area of sustainability and climate friendliness.

Catena-X wants to create equal rights for all partners through trustworthy management, where the entire information network is accessible and usable through open source. However, the prerequisite for access to certain data is always the publisher, who can decide individually who can dispose of the information and over what period of time.

An example of use is that a car recycling company gets all information for usable parts of a car model via Catena-X, can evaluate them easily and use them for a smooth workflow.

The heart of Catena-X

As the central communication component of the Catena-X architecture, the Eclipse Data Space Connector (EDC) creates the connection for sovereign, cross-organizational data exchange. The claim is: Whoever makes data available retains control and decides individually who is involved in the data exchange, how, when and where.

The guiding principles in the development of the EDC are independence, simplicity and the preservation of a small and efficient core. The functionality required for this is bundled in the open source project “Eclipse Dataspace Connectors”, to which the Catena-X partners contribute.
